All about autogas

Throughout the world, millions of cars run on gas fuel (LPG, CNG, LNG). Converting cars to gas supply is so common that is carried out by both big automakers and small specialized workshops.

The idea of auto gas was initially promoted by both by Italy and Holland. At the beginning AG Centrum drew from both models and strongly cooperated with Italian companies. 

Nowadays Poland is the second country worldwide taking into account the number of registered cars with LPG.

Auto gas installation ensures are completely safe for vehicles and its occupants. Appropriately selected installation, correct installation and proper calibration do not affect the technical properties of the vehicle. MYTH: The engine loses its power

FACT: There is no difference between Pb supply and LPG

In the case of the sequential installation (i.e., IV generation gas injection) a right choice of components, in particular gas injectors, delivers practically the same performance as on petro alone. That means that during normal driving user does not feel the difference between those two fuels. By measuring power and torque of the engine on a chassis dyno, it turns out that the difference for both fuels does not exceed 3%.

MYTH: Engine wears much faster when running on gas

FACT: Thank to LPG engine oil life extends significantly

Engine wear is a normal phenomenon and cannot be prevented. This process can only be limited - for example, by skillful operation of the engine, use good quality fluids, regular service etc. LPG gas fuel has the property that it doesn't bond to the engine oil molecules (as opposed to gasoline), which results in much less impurities, and extended service intervals. All that means that oil maintains its lubricating and cleaning characteristic for much longer time.

MYTH: LPG may cause the engine catch fire

FACT: 90% of car fires have no connection with the gas

Car fires are extremely rare - either on the road or in garage. In those cases the MYTH has brought up that the LPG installation caused fire. This is very seldom justified. The most common cause of car fire is a leak in the fuel system (collecting the vapors of gasoline) The second necessary condition for car fire is the spark which is, in most cases, caused by short circuit in the wiring or a faulty ignition system.

MYTH: Propane tank in the car is like having a ticking bomb

FACT: LPG tanks can withstand ten times the pressure than conventional fuel tanks

LPG tanks are subjected to very rigorous testing before certification. This means constant monitoring of tanks' production process. LPG operating pressure in a car installation is about 3 - 4 atmosphere. In order to pass the strength test tank is subjected to pressure of 50 atmospheres, while 70 atmospheres is the limit, above which tank deformation is allowed. Also, fixing the tank to the vehicle chassis are made to withstand forces of impact in the event of a collision. The values of these forces are taken at four times higher than those which the driver can withstand.

MYTH: Not all of the engines are "made for gas"

FACT: Every engine with spark ignition can work on LPG

The best thing to say would be that vehicles in "certain condition" should not be converted. Unfortunately, in case of heavily worn out engine, we cannot expect economic benefits. Gas mixtures require better conditions for combustion than gasoline which means that there must be a proper ignition and proper compression ratio of the mix. Many of these defects reveal only after switching to LPG. It often surprises drivers, because LPG system often reveals pre-installation negligence of the vehicle owner.

MYTH: New engines don't tolerate LPG

FACT: New engines with direct petrol injection take conversion to LPG very well

Currently, most of the new engines have gasoline direct injection fuel supply. It allows achieving extremely high power output with low capacity while maintaining a reasonable level of combustion. For many years now, these engines have been fitted with gas supply systems for both gaseous and liquid state - so this is not new but proven system existing on the market. With the proliferation of engines with direct fuel injection, dedicated LPG systems' market is on the rise. That means end an era of 'old un-gassed gasoline motors'.

Increasingly, car manufacturers also expand their offer with LPG models. The cost of the conversion, however, is much higher than that offered by flagship shops, recommended by manufacturers. An example might be a workshop of Polish manufacturer - Auto-Gaz Centrum - which can install Zenit PRO Direct system dedicated to engines with direct petrol injection. MYTH: LPG at every petrol station is of the same quality.

FACT: The quality and composition of LPG are important

For proper operation it is very important to appropriately follow season changes with a right proportion of propane butane but that varies from station to station. Hot summer allows the use of mixtures rich in butane, and cold winters require more propane in the composition.
Polish regulations on liquid fuels also apply to LPG. Gas that goes into the customers' tanks maintains high quality standards, however proportions of its components (propane - butane) are not always identical at each station and in various Polish regions.

MYTH: It doesn`t matter where do I assemble the LPG installation

MYTH: The engine designed to work on petrol shall work exclusively on petrol!

FACT: LPG is not less favorable than petrol

Gasoline engine should work on gasoline - it is logical and entirely justified. Each car manufacturer employs teams of engineers responsible for the best engine design and type of fuel used for the engine is fundamental. But the question remains: are gaseous fuels e.g. LPG less favorable than petrol?

But the question is whether gaseous fuels e.g. LPG are gaseous fuels e.g. LPG less favorable than petrol?

Physicochemical properties of propane-butane mixture in many ways are superior to gasoline. LPG has much higher octane number, many times less complex chemical composition (LPG contains pure hydrocarbons) and a significantly higher mass energy value. In the case of gaseous fuel in the liquid state we have the possibility to increase engine performance and lower fuel consumption at the same time. So there is no justification for limiting the use of gaseous fuels, you only need to properly adapt the cars to this type of fuel.
